Day 1: Marrakech » Atlas Mountains » Ouarzazate » Zagora [356 km]
After a delightful breakfast, our 2-day desert trip from Marrakech to Zagora commences, heading southward. Beyond the village of Ait Ourir, the route transforms, narrowing and ascending towards the impressive 2,260-meter Tizi-N-Tichka pass. At its base, the canyon welcomes us with the presence of the Tamesna River, rendering the terrain damp. Numerous small hamlets, sustained by waterways, grace the landscape, creating a tapestry of tinny villages.
Continuing our expedition, we encounter another marvel of the region, the UNESCO World Heritage site, Ait Benhaddou. This fortified village boasts crenelated towers and stands as one of the most enchanting Kasbahs in the Glaus region. Our route extends through Ouarzazate, navigating the anti-Atlas, and traversing the Draa Valley with its river, alongside which several small villages emerge.
The Draa Valley, one of Morocco’s largest, extends like a colossal green tongue, penetrating the desert for approximately 250 miles, guiding us to Zagora. Upon reaching Zagora, our camels eagerly await us to embark on a two-hour trek across the dunes. The night unfolds in the heart of the Sahara, beneath nomad tents, enveloped in serene silence. Here, we witness the spectacle of the sunset, stars, and moon. Dinner and a restful overnight stay at the desert camp (tent) bring the first day of our Marrakech to Zagora desert tour to a close.
