Day 6: Marrakech » Ait Ben Haddou » Ouarzazate » Dades Valley [325 km]
Depart from the vibrant city of Marrakech and ascend into the High Atlas Mountains, crossing at the stunning altitude of 2260 meters via the Tizi n’Tichka pass. As you descend, admire the traditional Berber villages scattered along the riverbanks.
Venture off the main road to discover the hidden gem of Kasbah Telouet. This kasbah may appear as a mere ruin from outside, but inside you’ll find beautifully preserved rooms that once belonged to the Pacha of Marrakech. The intricate tile work, plaster, and cedarwood craftsmanship within these walls are simply breathtaking.
Continue to the renowned Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site famous as a backdrop for numerous films. This ancient ksar, located on the former caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech, offers a glimpse into Morocco’s rich history and is a highlight for many on this route.
After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, drive towards Ouarzazate and then to the lush palm groves of Skoura, known for their hidden kasbahs. The journey continues along the picturesque Valley of Roses, leading to the Dades Valley, where you will spend the night. Day 7: Dades Valley to Merzouga Desert [269 km]
After enjoying breakfast, we depart from the picturesque Dades Valley, marveling at the stunning rock formations along the way. Our journey takes us through the Todra Valley, where we’ll witness panoramic views of ancient mud Berber villages nestled amidst palm groves.
Arriving at the Todgha Gorge, you’ll have the opportunity to walk beneath towering red cliffs that rise up to 300 meters at their narrowest point. Continuing on, we pass through Erfoud and Rissani, once known as Sijilmassa and the foundation of the Alaouite dynasty. Lunch will be provided en route.
Upon our arrival in Merzouga, you’ll be warmly welcomed with a refreshing cup of tea before settling into your hotel or riad for the night.
Day 8: Merzouga Tour: Berber Nomad Families & Black Desert [45 km]
Today, we embark on an exploration of the Merzouga desert area, beginning with a visit to the seasonal Lake Sirji and the village of Khamlia, home to the dark-skinned people originally from Mali. Here, you’ll enjoy their music and gain insight into their traditional way of life.
Next, we journey to the Meffes Mines to observe how they operate before venturing into the vast expanse of the desert. Amidst the enchanting views, we’ll pause for a traditional tea ceremony with Berber Bedouins living in tents, offering you the chance to meet their family members and learn about their customs.
Before returning to our accommodations, our local guides will provide instruction on camel riding and essential safety tips. Then, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the mystical Erg Chebbi sand-sea on camelback for approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. Spend the night under the stars in a cozy Berber tent, immersing yourself in the tranquility of the desert.
Day 9: Merzouga to Fes via Erfoud, Ziz Valley, and Ifrane [467 km]
After breakfast, return on camel back from the desert and depart for Fes. Visit Rissani, Erfoud, and enjoy the scenic Ziz Valley. Pass through Midelt, stop in the cedar forests of Azrou to see Barbary apes, and finish the day in Ifrane before returning to Fes. Overnight in Fes
